Mayar Hanna is a queer Syrian newcomer, activist, and community organizer currently based in Vancouver, Canada. I work as the Inland Program Coordinator at Rainbow Refugee Society, where I support LGBTQIA+ refugee claimants through legal referrals, housing coordination, and community outreach.

Before coming to Canada, I was actively involved in LGBTQIA+ advocacy in Iraq, working discreetly due to safety concerns. I supported queer individuals facing severe risks by offering personal guidance, translation, and connection to life-saving resources. That experience continues to shape my deep commitment to refugee justice, social education, and building safe, inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.

I’ve contributed to multiple advocacy and research projects, including the YSMENA Study, and I’m also interested in social media marketing, having completed a course to expand my skills in digital outreach and community engagement.

In addition to my coordination work, I have experience organizing community events and developing creative fundraising initiatives that bring people together in celebration and solidarity.
